We drove into the area through the fantastic wasteland created at the base of the Gigjökull glacier by the 2010 eruption. The volcano erupting under the ice cap melts huge quantities of ice; the water builds up under the ice cap until it bursts loose at the edge of the glacier in a tremendous flood of water, boulders, and ice. Siggi showed us one of the places where the water burst out from under the ice cap during the eruption.
