Siggi, our guide for one day with Mike and Bill and Siggi’s Super Jeep. We hiked in Þórsmörk for a day with our guide Siggi from South Iceland Adventures. He took us up to a peak on the other side of the valley from where the Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail descends. We could look over and just barely see the hikers on that trail. We traveled in his specially customized vehicle that was equipped to go through the running rivers in deep water; has two 50 gallon gas tanks (gas costs $10/gallon in Iceland with the price set by the government for the whole island); and two separate GPS systems. Siggi works in the local rescue squad and he said they pull an average of about one car full of stranded tourists out of a river every other day in the summer time. When asked how much this costs the tourists, Siggi replied that it would not be right to charge a fee for this because the people are in real trouble and need help; this situation is not exploited by the Icelandic people who have a strong sense of community and function cooperatively to survive in a hostile, largely undeveloped, environment.
