On Vatnajökull glacier at an altitude of 2,800 feet on Skálafellsjökull, one of Vatnajökull's numerous glaciers, approximately 35 miles west of the fishing town of Höfn. Jöklasel is 10 miles seemingly straight up the mountainside from the main road. The last 4 miles of the road require vehicles with four wheel drive, especially in cold weather months. The entire area was enveloped in clouds the first day we made the trip and visibility was very limited; these conditions made the dramatic climb even more dramatic. At one point on the drive, a herd of reindeer came charging out of the fog across the road in front of us and disappeared into the fog again. The second time we went up and saw the glacier field and the mountains briefly in the sunshine before the clouds rolled in again. Tour companies offer snowmobile trips on the glacier from here. Next page: view of the glacier from the parking lot with a heavy cloud bank rolling in.
