On Vatnajökull glacier is the mountain-hotel Jöklasel at an altitude of 2,800 feet on Skálafellsjökull, one of Vatnajökull's numerous glaciers, approximately 35 miles west of the fishing town of Höfn. Jöklasel is 10 miles seemingly straight up the mountainside from the main road. The last 4 miles of the road require vehicles with four wheel drive, especially in cold weather months. The Jöklasel facilities include a restaurant and sleeping bag accommodations for about 30 persons. The view from Jöklasel is absolutely breathtaking -- it is the highest restaurant in Iceland.
